MLB Trivia: Crowded Classes

While unlikely, it's possible that the MLB Hall of Fame Class of 2014 will include five players inducted on their first ballots: Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, Frank Thomas, Jeff Kent, and Mike Mussina. The current record for most players in an MLB Hall of Fame Class inducted on their first ballots is three; and it happened in 1999. Can you name those three players? (Hint: One went into the Hall as a Royal, another went in as a Ranger, and the third went in as a Brewer.)

With the hint, I think I would have gotten this one.

The Royal? That would be George Brett.

The Ranger? Nolan Ryan.

The Brewer? Robin Yount.

So that's your answer. In 1999, for the first time ever the Hall of Fame class included three first ballot inductees: George Brett, Nolan Ryan, and Robin Yount.

Mad Dog, Glavine, and Frank should be 1st ballot guys.

Kent should get in, but they'll find a way to drag it out a few years.

I dig Moose, and have a stack of his rookie cards sitting in my parents' house, but I can see him being one of those guys who comes closer and closer, only to fall just short after 15 years.

What I'm annoyed with is having to wait on Barry Larkin :-)

I don't even see why Larkin had to wait the mandatory 5 years... ;-)

Roland, from a numbers standpoint, I agree with your assessment that Maddux, Glavine, and Thomas should all be 1st ball guys. But after what happened to Roberto Alomar this year, it's hard to know what will happen with Thomas. Will they make him wait a year just because he was primarily a DH for a chunk of his career or because his relations with the media weren't that great?

Looking just at the numbers, I don't see how Alomar was kept out of the Hall this year.

Agreed on Robbie. He was always one of my favorites. And then he spit on that ump, which just made his even cooler.
