MLB Trivia: Opening Day Bombs

The start of the MLB season, Opening Day, is a special time that brings with it a little extra energy compared to the rest of the 162-game grind. Two players are tied for the most career home runs on Opening Day with eight. One of those players is Frank Robinson. The other player accomplished the feat much more recently. Can you name him?

Greg McConnell said...: The answer is Ken Griffey Jr. Interestingly enough, Griffey hit his 7th Opening Day homer in 1999, which was his last season with Seattle before heading to Cincinnati. He didn't hit his 8th and record-tying Opening Day homer until 10 years later in 2009, which also happened to be after he had returned to play for Seattle again. So he never hit an Opening Day homer while a Cincinnati Red.; March 30, 2011 at 9:29 PM

My Baseball History

The first year that I really started paying attention to Major League Baseball was 1990. I was 10 living in Ohio and my favorite team was the Cincinnati Reds. As it turned out, the Reds started that season 9-0 and the excitement pulled this 10-year-old boy along for the ride. I remember quite a bit from that season, including the Reds' eventual sweep of the Oakland A's in the World Series.

The lesson I took from that season was that dreams can come true. Of course, given what's happened to the Reds in the many years that followed, I've learned that nightmares can come true too. ;-)

I've since moved to Chicagoland and now follow the White Sox, Cubs, and Reds. In general, I'm just a baseball fan who enjoys the beauty of the game no matter which teams are playing.
