MLB Trivia: Losing Control

During a game last week Javier Vazquez hit three batters in a row. That's only the eighth time it's happened in major league history. The last time a pitcher hit three batters in a row was in 2004. Can you name that pitcher? (Hint: He broke into the bigs with the Tigers in 1999, won a World Series with the Cardinals in 2006, and pitched a little bit this season for the Dodgers--the same team he was pitching for back in 2004.)

I could only get this by looking at the Dodgers roster...but I would venture to say the answer is the less talented older brother of Jered Weaver.

Yes, Pauly, the answer is Jeff Weaver.

For what it's worth, Jeff Weaver was the losing pitcher in Game 2 of the 2006 World Series; the winning pitcher was Kenny Rogers who had the infamous smudge on his hand during the first inning.

In Game 5 of the 2006 World Series, Weaver went 8 strong innings before handing off to Adam Wainright in the 9th. Weaver got the win, Wainright the save, and the Cards the championship.

Didn't Red Sox Josh Beckett hit three Yankees in the Bronx last season????

Kate, I'll look into it and get back to you. BTW, did Beckett hit three in a row? That's the key to this trivia question, but I'll certainly see if I can find something about Beckett hitting three in a row.

BTW, it still looks like Javier Vazquez was the most recent MLB pitcher to hit three batters in a row. I read through Beckett's games at New York last year and didn't see any notes about him hitting three batters in a row. Also, a Google search still only brings up Vazquez.
