Trivia: Throwin' heat

Who was the first Major League pitcher to officially be clocked at over 100mph on the radar gun during a game?

Radar guns are a relatively new invention, aren't they? Maybe in the 60's or early 70's?

I'd guess Nolan Ryan, which would've been my guess even w/out the hint. But I like my guess more with the hint.

No, not Sidd Finch. (Although, he was the first to throw 168mph.)

And yes, Nolan Ryan was a good guess... On September 7, 1974, in a game against the White Sox, California Angels pitcher Nolan Ryan became the first player to break the 100 mph barrier when one of his pitches was officially clocked at 100.8 miles per hour.

For what it's worth, I thought this Slate article was interesting regarding the topic of why the human body can't throw a baseball much faster than 100 mph.
